Hi David...thank you for your message. Yes, traditionally this is a prized oil. Unlike other Keruing oil that solidifies, oil from this particular species can be kept in almost liquid form, making it easier to work with. It is used to light nights (like candles) as well as for dugout canoe repairs (but to be mixed with other materials) back when no other form of transportation is available.

Had some keruing wood panelling which has been removed and most of it cut for firewood - that IS a waste!
When put on the fire the resin/oil comes out in large amounts.
Is there any other use for this oil?

I just spent a few hours reading through your old blog posts - excellent information and experiences. This post takes the cake, though. This huge, old tree with its flaming mouth - amazing stuff. Thanks for putting this together!

Hi Pokokkayu...l know the feeling. But the Semelais have been living in tandem with the forest around Lake Bera for more than 600 years. The Keruing oil is an important part of their survival back then. The techniques they use as demonstrated does not harm the tree. A tree 'belongs' to a family for generations. The burning is controlled and merely to 'stimulate' the excretion of the Keruing oil.
