Around Dunedin- day 2 of our South Island road trip Part I

The St Paul Anglican Cathedral- a truly beautiful building

The St Paul Anglican Cathedral- a truly beautiful building

Dunedin turned out to be a ‘bigger’ town than I had imagined. I heard stories of it being a very small and boring place famous for its drinking culture. We have a good Malaysian friend Sri studying in University of Otago and thankfully he was around the time of our visit to host us around.

South of South Island road trip- Moeraki Boulders

A good solid 8 days of road trip, South Island, New Zealand!

A good solid 8 days of road trip, South Island, New Zealand!

Boy oh boy…we did a big road trip south of South Island, New Zealand in Dec 2015. By far longer (days and distance) than the previous road trip we did to Nelson. Its the year end long Christmas break and we knew we had to seize the opportunity before heading home. Work has been tiring me out (more mentally really)and I agreed to Meun’s suggestion of this road trip without much thought. She did all the planning for the trip. Food, accommodation, places, petrol stations, shops and the list goes on. She did an awesome job indeed.

Last 2 days, Nelson – Kaikora – Lincoln road trip

The monument at the center of New Zealand

The last 2 days on our first ‘big’ road trip in New Zealand involves a night stay at Kaikora between Nelson and Lincoln. We woke up early on our last day at Nelson and Penny suggested that we take a short walk to the ‘Centre of New Zealand’. My aching knee protested but Penny assured me its just a short walk along the backyards of Nelson. Okay…why not.

Blenheim – Picton – Nelson

Stunning sceneries of wineyards, mountains and blue skies all the way

Stunning landscape of vineyards, mountains and blue skies all the way

It was a long first day of our road trip in New Zealand. We drove from Lincoln to Kaikora with a major extended stop to sneak up on some beautiful New Zealand fur seals. Meun made all the accomodation arrangements and we will be spending the first night at Spring Creek Holiday Park. We were all so tired by the time we got to the holiday park. The sight of the bunks in the tiny room was so inviting. But first things first…a visit to local resident Eddie and his mates is in order.

The Seals at Kaikora… South Island, New Zealand

We were soon on our way in search of the seals at Kaikora. The seals were probably one of the ‘real’ attractions that interest me personally. Its a rare opportunity and I think it is worth every ounce of effort to see them in real life. It was an anxious drive from Kaikora town to Ohau stream walkway and waterfall. We were constantly on the lookout for seals on the sides of the road because a friend told me they would be everywhere.

Our first New Zealand South Island road trip

Beautiful beach but where are all the people?

Beautiful beach but where are all the people?

Some months back, we did our first South Island road trip from Christchurch to Nelson. I have been procrastinating writing about the trip because it was a rather big trip and I really did not know where to start. Now, with less hours of work I am able to secure this coming few weeks, I decided what better way to spend the extra free hours than to recap this road trip.
