Authentically smoked wild boar; A trip to Sarawak’s jungle Pt. V

We spent our first night traveling into the interior of Sarawak in one of the guide’s house. The hospitality was exceptional and we were treated like family members immediately. We were obviously tired from the exhaustive 4WD journey and any form of comfort (especially food) is God sent. Our host made our day when he asked if we wanted something to eat. Some of us said yes until we saw what’s been cooking over fire.

Wild durian and Kolok/Kolo mee of Miri; A trip to Sarawak’s jungle Pt. II

My first time encountering the Miri wild durian

My first encounter with the Miri wild durian

I got my first taste of wild durian and Mee ‘Kolok’ or simply Mee ‘Kolo’  in Miri. Both of these foods are familiar to me yet uniquely different. I am beginning to love this town even more now. A Sarawak jungle food and local delicacy all  in one evening. Awesome!

On the way to Lake Kenyir, we decided to stop and have a look at Bama Cave (Gua Bama). This cave is located along the trunk road at Kampung Relong, Kuala Lipis. There are road signs to direct you to the cave.

Enjoying fish in the jungle; Part II

How the fish looked like out from the fire

How the fish looked like out from the fire

Now…this is the way to enjoy fish in the jungle! Having just fished them out of the water, these fishes went straight for a jungle style cooking . Having taken the fish out from the fire, it was absolutely charred on the outside. We had doubts that the fish was eatable.

Cooking fish in the jungle; the Orang Asli way- Part I

Meun is always on to safety

Meun is always on to safety

This is our first experience cooking fish in the jungle using the Orang Asli way. It’s like a Malaysian bush cooking crash course.  We have cooked and BBQ fish in the bush before but it normally involves some form of stove or metal grill. There’s also the process of cleaning the fish, seasoning it with salt and spices and wrapping them in some sort of aluminum foil or banana leaves.

This particular experience cooking fish in the jungle changed how we used to view bush cooking. Simplicity is often the best way to prepare food.

Community cooking at an Orang Asli village

Cooking food using natural wood

Cooking food using natural wood

Coming together on big occasions and helping each other out seems to be a norm in most small, tightly knit communities. Such is the case of one particular Orang Asli in the Bera region in the state of Pahang.

I was fortunate to be part of a nature trip led by Malaysian nature guide John Chan into the remote part of Bera. The Orang Asli community there was already expecting us and come lunch time, it seemed obvious that a lot of effort was put in by the villagers to feed almost 37 of us.

Puchong fishing; an old indigenous people game

A Puchong making a get away

A Puchong making a get away

I came across this odd, probably very old indigenous (Orang Asli or Orang Asal) people of Malaysia game when I visited a remote Semelai village in the state of Pahang. Our group was hanging around the kitchen, waiting for lunch to be ready when I spotted a couple of Orang Asli children squatting and staring at the ground. Their ‘focus’ at whatever they were doing was enough to tickle my curiosity.

Buah Jering & evil spirit talisman from Slim River

I bought a plate of Buah Jering (Pithecellobium jiringa) from the Slim River wet market on my way to Tibang waterfall . Mind you, this is no ordinary Buah Jering. These few fruits have been planted in the ground till they grow shoots, which supposingly makes the fruit even tastier!

Sox’s Island; A fun day out for a furry friend in Malaysian jungle

Our effort to turn Christmas day 2008 into Sox’s day out turned out extremely well. At Hulu Yam, not only did we manage to find a spot with no one around (that’s also probably because we arrive VERY early) but we also found a river with a small island on it!

Sox have been very apprehensive about getting into the water so far. She did not even attempt to go near the lake’s water edge on the way here. The island we thought would be perfect to let her off the leash without having her storming off into the jungle.

I carried Sox over onto the island but decided to leave the leash on. Just in case if she pulls that ‘sprint’ dash again, it would (hopefully) be easier for me to pull ‘catch’ her. I let go off the leash and she was on her way exploring the island. Me and Meun were both very happy seeing Sox exploring the island on her own. Sox seems to be enjoying every bit of it and we are like proud parents watching their daughter running around on her own for the very first time.

Sox’s day out in tropical jungle of Malaysia; the journey

young-sox

A young Sox

Here’s our little darling…Sox. Sox is a mongrel that somehow decided to make our house her home. I was away in Tioman island when she came to the house. Meun called in a frantically panic yet cute way “Dear…there’s a dog in the house. It won’t go away…it’s so cute”.
