It is amazing how the Bidayuhs in Semban, Sarawak make use of bamboo in their daily life. Its been known that bamboo has a thousand and one uses. I have seen bamboo being used to start fire, cook food, obtain water, carvings, weapon, traps and so much more. But during this second trip to Semban, I learn new uses of bamboo.

Stored on the roof of a hut on a farm in Semban are a pile of traps I have not seen before. It was my second visit to Semban village in Sarawak and local Semban guide Glen explains to me how Tilong, a trap made of bamboo is used for small game like jungle rats and squirrel. Best of all, this bamboo trap is a stand alone unit and lasts for a long time!

Meun and Sox walking pass the bundles of cut bamboo
Its been a while since Sox went out with us on a jungle walk. So, with a free weekend around the corner, we decided to bring her out to a patch of jungle not far from Kuala Lumpur. We headed for one of our favorite trails, pushing off from our home as early as 7am. It was a nice day indeed, though we know the leeches will be waiting for us as it has been raining the day before.

Never felt more at home in a stranger’s house
The hospitality of the Bidayuhs in Semban is overwhelming. They shared with us the bountiful produce of their land, made sure we saw & experience all the things we wanted to and even had the doors of their home open for us to spend the nights. We totally enjoyed our visit to their village. It was also our first encounter with the Bidayuh’s traditional bamboo smoke pipe, Tepui and fermented pork called Kersam (or Kersem)
