I am beginning to realize that I am most happy exploring new places. A friend and teacher, Jan invited me to join him exploring a river called Sg Luit in Kuala Kubu Bharu one weekend. A well learn historian, waterfall addict and a good friend, I find it difficult to resist a walk in the jungle with Jan.

We had no specific objective except to explore the river. This river is located nearby Bukit Kutu.
I have been to this area unintentionally with another group before. Had no clue that it is actually called Luit. Back then, I was part of a jungle survival ‘crash course’ for a lovely American couple.

We started our hike early. We walked into the jungle with the river on our left as our ‘handrail’. Occasionally , we would walk off the trail towards the river to check out the thunderous roaring sound of the river. That noise would normally mean only one thing and that is a waterfall is nearby.

Yes, I am wearing an overall. An idea I got after seeing another friend wearing them into the jungle. This is the second time I am wearing it and am beginning to get the hang of it really. One thing for sure, the overall sure helps to keep leeches out.

This river reminds me of the nameless river near Rawang. All along the river there are huge rocks all over. Immediately I fell in love with it.

Some parts of the trail I can remember. Some I cannot remember at all. We made a few stops in between, mainly to take pics as well as some sips of water.

About an hour and half of later, we came by the exact spot I have camped before. Part of the benches we made is still there.

For another hour we walked until about 1pm. Upon which we decided that it was probably far enough for the day. We picked a spot by the river to have lunch. I can hear Jan laughing inside when I tried starting fire using a fire saw while he starts up his gas stove. And he did laugh when I finally gave up.

After lunch, both Jan and I decided to river trek downstream. Our target is to reach the old campsite. And from thereon, continue on land. This was probably the best part of the entire trip. The river was magnificently beautiful, pristine and best of all…void of any human made rubbish.

Note the shining walking stick I was holding in the picture above? This is a spanking new walking stick which I paid RM20 for and this was its first outing. Just as I was about to get the hang of using a walking stick, it slipped off my hand at one of the mini rapids and vanished. I tried looking for it but the water was too strong.

We finally arrived back at the campsite some two and half hours later. The river trek was amazing but at the same time painful on the knees, ankle and every other single bones in the body. From there on we followed back the trail to our vehicles.

I am coming back to explore Sungai Luit soon. It would be a great place to trek, camp and just relax. Here’s a shot of the place on Google Earth.
